2009-04-30 -Chronicle-Herald - High-speed Connections Slowly Reach Rural Nova Scotia

Hundreds of homes in Guysborough and Richmond counties have access to the best of the Internet after the latest expansion of service by Seaside High-Speed.

About 1,000 dwellings in the area are now within range of a connection, the Sydney-based Internet service provider said Wednesday.

"We are very excited to see that Seaside has moved its network into Guysborough," said Warden Lloyd Hines.

Due to the rugged nature of the area’s landscape, there is no guarantee that everyone in the area will have access to the signal, the company said. For properties where signal strength is inadequate, further expansion of the network may be required.

"Residents in our district have been waiting patiently since this project was announced," said Mr. Hines. "We know there is still some time before the all of the network is complete and we look forward to all residents receiving service."

High-speed Internet access is now available in the following communities: Boylston, Charlos Cove, Coddles Harbour, Cooks Cove, Country Harbour Mines, Drumhead, Fox Island Main, Glenkeen, Hadleyville, Halfway Cove, Larrys River, Lincolnville, Little Harbour, Lower White Head, Lundy, MacPherson Lake, Manassette Lake, Middle Country Harbour, Middle Manchester and Middle Melford.

It is also available in: New Harbour, New Harbour East, New Harbour West, New Upper Harbour, Peas Brook, Port Felix, Port Shoreham, Roachvale, Sand Point, Seal Harbour, South Manchester, St. Francis Harbour, Steep Creek, Stormont, Sunnyville, Tor Bay, Tracadie Road, Upper Whitehead, West Cooks Cove, and Whitehead.

Across Chedabucto Bay in Richmond County, the following communities will also see service: Cape Auguet, Evanston, Janvrin Harbour, Port Malcolm, Port Royal, Robins, St. Marys, Walkerville, West Artichat and Whiteside.

Seaside’s network spans nine counties throughout north-eastern Nova Scotia, from Cumberland to Victoria. When completed, the network will have the capacity to serve approximately 38,000 residences and businesses in rural Nova Scotia previously without high-speed.

The service provider said the service is reliable and comparable in speed and affordability with urban areas.
